A Brief History of Milford

On February 1st, 1639, the land originally known as Wepawaug, was purchased from the chief of the local Pagusset tribe, Ansantawae, by a group of English settlers. That land became Milford, one of the early settlements in Connecticut. Over time, several new towns broke off from Milford and incorporated separately, including Woodbridge, Bethany, Orange, and West Haven. Milford was known for shipbuilding, farming and oystering, and was also a beach resort for residents of New Haven and Bridgeport.

Living Locally

Did you know that food products in most American homes, food included, have travelled an average of 1500 miles to get there?   Did you know that 17% of energy use in the U.S. is directly related to food production, processing, and transportation?  Did you know that if every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week of locally grown and produced foodstuffs, we would save 1.1 million barrels of oil every week?  Did you know that it takes an average of 127 calories to process, package, and ship 1 calorie's worth of lettuce from the farm to your grocery store?

The city of Milford has several good resources for folks who want to live locally:

Milford Farmers Market: Located at Walnut Beach off East Broadway, the Milford Farmer's Market is open from July through October every Monday, 3pm to 6pm.

Robert Treat Farm: a family owned and operated farm since 1948. They offer the finest fruits, vegetables and an array of perennials, annuals, nursery items and cut flowers.

Hale Hill Farms BioFuel: Bioheat home heating oil--works with existing equipment from a Branford, CT company. There are three service contractors that cover the Milford area.

The Farmer's Cow: Milk that comes from six Connecticut family-owned farms that do not use artificial growth hormones. Collectively, they milk 2,300 cows and manage 6,000 acres of farmland. You can find it in local supermarkets.

Whole Foods: An organic and natural foods supermarket in West Hartford with new stores planned for Darien and Fairfield. Whole Foods carries Connecticut-grown produce and other edibles from small food makers. It's also carries natural meats, healthy baked goods, organic produce and non-toxic beauty and cleaning products. (50 Raymond Rd., West Hartford, 860-523-8500, Daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m.). It's not Milford, but it's not 1500 miles away, either.
